Good bulk .22lr ammo? (vanity)
July. 19th 2010
Hey all, I got a used Remington 597 a little while back (love it!) and I'm wondering what a good brand of bulk .22lr ammo is. I ran 100 minimags and federal game shoks through it tonight, and they performed well, but it would be nice to have something cheaper for general practice. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance, ~v.a.

So I splurged and bought a 1939 Russian sniper rifle with sling, bayonet, ammo case, tool kit, etc. for $150 at a local gun shop. The bolt sticks a bit, but I understand I must clean out the cosmoline, which is my next step. Found all kinds of advice on the subject on the Web. Any FReeper advice?

Recently we reported on these pages the test results of Kimber’s and CZ’s 22 conversion units. The Kimber was for any 1911 and the Kadet was for the CZ 75. We like the versatility these units give the owner. There are quite a few other conversions around, and more seem to be added every month, with all makers reporting very brisk sales. The advantages of these conversions are obvious. For a fraction of the cost of another gun, or about what you’d expect to pay for a low-priced 22 auto, you can convert your main centerfire gun to shoot inexpensive 22 LR ammo. And it’s the same trigger pull used with centerfire ammo. Within a few hundred rounds the units pay for themselves in ammo costs saved. That’s why these conversions are all flying off dealers’ shelves.

Abe's Awesome Armaments in New Hampton, NH
New Hampshire --(Ammoland.com)- Abe Foote of Abe’s Awesome Armaments in New Hampton, NH, who was an unfairly prosecuted victim of New Hampshire’s former restrictions on switchblade sales, was reunited on Wednesday with some of the knives the police had seized.
Unfortunately, approximately one third of the knives seized by the police remain unaccounted for, having disappeared from the evidence room. An internal investigation has been launched by the County Prosecutor. Knife Rights attorney and Freedom’s Point award winner Evan Nappen got the court order for the knives’ return.
Nothing will ever truly compensate Abe for the miscarriage of justice he suffered between the unfair prosecution and a poor defense by his former attorney, but he can at least gain some satisfaction that he’ll have 2/3’s of his stock back just in time for Bike Week in New Hampshire and that the missing knives are being criminally investigated.

Winchester Ammunition Awarded U.S. Army Contract
East Alton, IL – -(AmmoLand.com)- The United States Department of Defense recently announced that Winchester Ammunition has been awarded a $43.4 million award from the U.S. Army for .50 caliber SLAP ammunition.
“Winchester has a proud tradition of providing dependable ammunition to our military and law enforcement agencies,” said Dick Hammett, president of Winchester Ammunition.
“We are truly honored that the U.S. Army has selected Winchester ammunition to use in its mission of protecting and defending the United States.”
.50 caliber SLAP ammunition
SLAP stands for Saboted Light Armor Penetrator and is designed to defeat lightly armored targets. The .50 caliber SLAP ammunition was first used in 1990 during Operation Desert Storm.
It uses a reduced caliber, heavy metal (tungsten) .30 inch diameter penetrator wrapped in a “plastic” sabot of .50 inch diameter, which is much lighter in weight than normal ball .50 caliber ammunition.
The velocity of SLAP ammunition can also be increased in an original M2 Machine Gun to construct a very fast round with a flat trajectory to enhance impact on the target.
According to U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, D-Ill., “half of the work will be done at the company’s plant in East Alton, Ill.”
The contract is to be completed by 2016.

Target World Inc. of Pennsylvania Awarded NRA’s 2009 Dealer Recruiter of the Year
Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- The National Rifle Association just announced Target World Inc. of Chalfont, Pennsylvania, the 2009 NRA Dealer Recruiter of the Year.
Since 1992, Target World has been a consistent performer in the NRA Recruiting Program. Owner Danny Carr gives all of the credit to his employees.
“These are the people on the front lines with the customers. You have to talk to everyone,” Carr explains. “They’ve already shown an interest in our field by coming to the store. If they come to the range, we know they enjoy firearms and should be an NRA member.”
By keeping his employees up-to-date with all of the latest information as well as rewarding them with a commission for every membership sold, Carr makes sure that Target World employees are prepared with all of the tools necessary to sell memberships.
Past winners of the NRA Dealer Recruiter of the Year award include G.A.T. Guns of Dundee, Illinois, and Chuck’s Gun Shop of Riverdale, Illinois.
The NRA Recruiting Program provides marketing, sales, and support materials for firearm dealers to promote NRA in their stores. NRA membership is an easy and appropriate add-on sale to any firearm or accessory purchase. In addition to building a stronger NRA, the commission option is a great way to reward employees.
For more information on how your business can become an official NRA Recruiter, visit www.nra.org/recruiter or call (800) 672-0004 option 2.

[Guest Post]: Local ingenuity: global adaptations … [ Part 5 ]
June. 11th 2010
Hiya there. Y-man again. Sorry I have been away for so long. I have been very busy and have been away from access to the internet for some time now. Sadly, I have been away from my beloved shotgun too!
Well, I’ve been back for a few weeks now and have done some further modifications to my Mossberg 500A.
All these modifications have been done mainly during this period because my country is going to have elections next year. The politicians have started stock-piling arms and ammo: these they will use to arm private “armies”(more like gangs!) which will be used to intimidate the public and the electoral bodies, and who will be used to fight other groups of thugs, as well as assassinations of rivals. All this is not very open, but it happens. It is not as if there will be running battles in the streets, but the period is normally one of heightened tension. There will be some robberies, shoot-outs, some attacks, assassinations (Some as gruesome as pouring acid down the throat of a political rival…)
So, because of this tension, even 12ga ammo (Even birdshot) has become so scarce and hard to find. Prices have gone up for the few packs one can get around: as much as $60 for a pack of 25 12ga Birdshot shells now! And even this is difficult to come by nowadays. So, I haven’t been doing a whole lot of shooting, but just sitting at home almost each day after work: cleaning that shotgun (That shotgun is spotless now!), thinking up new improvements to the firearm, and to my ammunition. (Of course: I do NOT load my firearm when doing these activities: safety FIRST!)
First, I decided to stop bothering with all those exotic sight “systems” I have been toying with. So I used a Truglo sight, like this one:
and basically JB-Welded it to my front muzzle area as a good front sight. I have had a bead before, which did not work for me, and had tried several options which also had not worked.
This one looks good.
I realized that a lot of the issues I was having with lack of accuracy with my shotgun had to do with either not having a rear sight at all, or having one that was not just good enough.
Check out my BAD day at the range here…
So I worked on the idea of fixing a rear sight on the heatshield. I welded a nut on it, gauging the elevation and direction all by hand and one eye closed ![]()
Then I glued unto this nut two bits of green light-gathering plastic from a Turkey sight I had discarded a while ago. See new aligned sight picture here:
Well, now: I have my rear and front sights ready: notice how in the sight picture the front red dot can be seen between the rear green dots?
I went to the range today and my sights work! Still needing some “polishing”, but at least, I’m putting “lead on the head”(This is a 1-foot “target” at 25 yards, free-hand shooting. Using 11 of my home-made slugs.)

For the sake of nostalgia, I gathered and collated videos of my progress in shooting over the last three years, which you can see here…
I have also radically improved my home-fabricated slugs, with a lot of progress with my home-made slug designs and casting. Check out my latest work here…The inspiration is the “LYMAN” type slugs. Note how I had to fabricate my mold?

I know these are not new things: and most people in America and some parts of Europe take them for granted, but consider that I am working with crude basic tools, and having to fabricate many things from scratch.
“Life should be a hoot! Blow your horn!”
Many thanks, y’all!

Friends of NRA Holds Exclusive Event at Henry Repeating Arms
Henry Big Boy .45 Cal Rifle
FAIRFAX, VA – -(Ammoland.com)- A historical first took place on June 4, 2010, when a Friends of NRA event was held at the Henry Repeating Arms manufacturing facility in Bayonne, New Jersey.
In addition to opening his facility to Friends of NRA, Anthony Imperato, owner and president of the family-owned Henry Repeating Arms, made numerous donations to the program. Keynote speaker Cam Edwards of NRA News was one of the many highlights of the evening. Escorted by a camera crew, Cam and his company filmed the special events during the banquet and secured several interviews with those who were in attendance.
The fun filled event featured both silent and live auctions, as well as raffles and games. Attendees were treated to watching a Henry Big Boy .45 cal rifle be assembled while Henry employees described the precision process. Once completed, the Limited Edition One of One firearm was then donated to the event and was sold in the live auction.
In recognition of hosting this amazing event as well as the Henry family tradition of supporting the shooting sports, Friends of NRA presented a special one of a kind Henry rifle by Baron Engraving to Henry Repeating Arms.
Friends of NRA is a grassroots fund-raising program that fosters community involvement, raises money, and gives 100% of the net proceeds to qualified local, state, and national programs. Working with the NRA’s field staff, thousands of volunteers nationwide participate in the program by organizing committees and planning events in their communities.
