For many years, hunters wishing to travel by airline have been able to transport firearms and ammunition in secure, checked baggage when declared during the check in process something that is done every day at airports across our country. However, until two weeks ago, Amtrak passengers were not permitted to do likewise. Even though it is sometimes much more convenient for sportsmen to travel by rail, particularly in rural and remote parts of the country, Amtrak stopped offering any way for individuals to transport secured guns in 2001.

Post a CommentU.S. Army Unveils 'Revolutionary' XM25 Rifle in Afghanistan
December. 2nd 2010
Since the dawn of modern warfare, the best way to stay alive in the face of incoming fire has been to take cover behind a wall. But thanks to a game-changing "revolutionary" rifle, the U.S. Army has made that tactic dead on arrival. Now the enemy can run, but he can't hide. After years of development, the U.S. Army has unleashed a new weapon in Afghanistan — the XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System, a high-tech rifle that can be programmed so that its 25-mm. ammunition detonates either in front of or behind a target, meaning it can be fired…

December. 1st 2010
Samuel O. Hengel was armed with more than 200 bullets when he took his Marinette [WI] High School classmates hostage, authorities said Wednesday. Hengel, 15, brought a duffel bag with two semiautomatic handguns – a 9-millimeter and a .22-caliber – and the ammunition into his 6th hour social studies class Monday. None of his classmates or his teacher, Valerie Burd, were hurt. Hengel shot himself as police stormed into the room Monday night and he died the next day from his wound. When Hengel was taken to Bay Area Medical Clinic Monday night, emergency room personnel discovered 21 9-millimeter bullets…
Post a CommentUS deploys 'game-changer' weapon to Afghanistan
December. 1st 2010
WASHINGTON (AFP) It looks and acts like something best left in the hands of Sylvester Stallone's "Rambo," but this latest dream weapon is real — and the US Army sees it becoming the Taliban's worst nightmare. The Pentagon has rolled out prototypes of its first-ever programmable "smart" grenade launcher, a shoulder-fired weapon that uses microchipped ammunition to target and kill the enemy, even when the enemy is hidden behind walls or other cover.
Post a CommentA Trio OF M14s: Springfield, Fulton Armory, Polytech Custom
November. 22nd 2010
In the world of 308 auto-loading rifles, the M14 and its look-alikes reign just about supreme. They have it all, looks, power, function, capacity, plus a great variety of stock and accessory configurations from wood to all manner of polymer that can convert an M14 or M1A into just about any configuration you might want, particularly if you have deep pockets. In this test we look at [IMGCAP(1)]three wood-stocked versions, a remanufactured Chinese-actioned Polytech M14/S that was converted several years ago by Fulton Armory into a mostly GI-part rifle (about $1900), a new Fulton Armory M14 ($2755), and an M1A from Springfield Armory ($1739). The M14/S was fitted with a Burris 2-8X scope in an S&K mount, but the iron sights were still usable with the scope attached. We used both the scope and iron sights to test that rifle so you could see what one of these rifles can do, and used the irons on the other two. We tested with three types of ball ammunition, the only type recommended in these firearms. It was Federal Gold Medal match, Magtech 150-grain ball from Brazil, and mixed lot of recovered ammunition purchased in bulk with headstamps from Israel, Italy, Belgium, and Canada, which we used unsorted. Here’s what we found.
Post a CommentBest Guns and Gear for 2010
November. 22nd 2010
Every December I survey the work Ben Brooks, Roger Eckstine, Ray Ordorica, Joe Syczylo, Gene Taylor, Kevin Winkle, R.K. Campbell, and Ralph Winingham have done in Gun Tests, with an eye toward selecting guns, accessories, and ammunition the magazine’s testers have endorsed. From these evaluations I pick the best from a full year’s worth of tests and distill summary recommendations for readers, who often use them as year-end shopping guides. These ‘best of’ choices are a mixture of our original tests and other information I’ve compiled during the year. After the magazine’s FFLs sell high-rated test products to readers, I keep tabs on how many of those guns do over time, and if the firearms and accessories continue performing well, then I have confidence including them in this wrap-up.
Post a CommentCalifornia: NRA/CRPA Foundation Withdraw Motion for Preliminary Injunction, Negotiate Expedited Briefing Schedule for MSJ and Trial
November. 22nd 2010
On June 17, 2010, the CRPA Foundation (funded by the NRA and CRPA) filed a lawsuit in Fresno Superior Court challenging the ammunition regulation statutes enacted by Assemblyman Kevin de Leon’s Assembly Bill (AB) 962 from the 2009 legislative session. The suit, Sheriff Clay Parker vs. State of California, challenges AB 962’s requirement that “handgun ammunition” be stored out of the reach of customers, its ammunition sales registration and fingerprinting requirements, and its face-to-face requirement for all deliveries and transfers of ownership of “handgun ammunition.” The lawsuit primarily alleges that the mandates of AB 962 are incomprehensible, and that the law’s definition of “handgun ammunition” is unconstitutionally vague. Copies of the filings in in Parker v. California can now be viewed at http://www.calgunlaws.com/index.php/…op-ab-962.html.
