For many years, hunters wishing to travel by airline have been able to transport firearms and ammunition in secure, checked baggage when declared during the check in process something that is done every day at airports across our country. However, until two weeks ago, Amtrak passengers were not permitted to do likewise. Even though it is sometimes much more convenient for sportsmen to travel by rail, particularly in rural and remote parts of the country, Amtrak stopped offering any way for individuals to transport secured guns in 2001.

Georgia Tech student Justin Myers recently had a very bad evening. He was expecting guests in his dorm room when four armed intruders greeted him at the door. They were able to steal merchandise and knock out two of the 19-year old student’s teeth for two principal reasons: 1) Armed robbers are always armed, and 2) Georgia Tech students are never allowed to have firearms on campus.
Post a CommentCarry group campaigns to allow guns at Farm and Fleet(WI)
December. 31st 2010
According to Wisconsin Carry, lots of big chain stores allow customers to wear their guns as they shop. One that doesn't is Blain's Farm and Fleet, based in Janesville. Some of the open carry advocates noticed the posted sign probibiting firearms at the Oak Creek store, and now the organization is trying to mobilize a campaign to persuade Blain's to rethink its policy. You can read Wisconsin Carry president Nik Clark's piece about the issue here in AmmoLand. "I think the time is right and there is an opportunity to influence their decision if we all send polite letters and…

I received an email from Daren Lott who let me know about a Petition in Michigan to clarify the laws regarding NFA firearms and have the AG address issues that were not addressed in his previous opinion. Amtrak’s firearms policy poses no risk
December. 8th 2010
Amtrak’s recent announcement that it would allow passengers to bring unloaded guns on trains that offered checked baggage service must have struck many in the traveling public as odd.
After all, the announcement comes soon after another federal agency began conducting full body scans and intrusive pat down searches at many of the nation’s airports.
Wyoming: Cody residents respect Right-to-Carry
December. 8th 2010
Most of the community seems to agree with some loosening of the no weapons policy at the rec center.
That longtime policy was challenged recently by local people as violating state law. The Wyoming attorney general stated in a letter to city officials that while only the state may regulate “concealed carry” firearms, municipalities can regulate “open carry” under an exemption.
Amtrak to let passengers bring guns on most trains
December. 2nd 2010
Reversing a near decade long ban, Amtrak will allow passengers to bring guns on most trains starting next month, including several that stop in Sacramento.
The change, pushed by gun rights advocates and ordered by Congress, aligns Amtrak’s firearms policy with air travel rules that allow unloaded guns to be stored in locked baggage holds.
Kansas: Lawmaker to push again for Right-to-Carry on Campus

A state lawmaker said he’ll try again to push through a law allowing concealed firearms to be carried on college campuses.
The effort to allow guns on campus was supported by the House during the 2010 legislative session, but died in the Senate.
Silencers on an airplane and being detained by TSA
November. 22nd 2010
Last week, I got an email and spoke to an individual (who was an attorney) who had been incorrectly advised by TSA that it was OK to carry a silencer on a plane. The problem occurred when he tried to follow TSA’s advise. A silencer is defined as a firearm and should not be taken in one’s carry on luggage. Luckily this individual was not charged with a crime and only ended up being inconvenienced and missing his flight.
After contacting the FBI, BATFE, and Dallas police (none of whom had a definitive answer) the Dallas police and DFW police said the suppressor should be turned over to TSA who eventually returned it to the owner.
Others have reported that TSA does not understand that Silencers are firearms and have not allowed them to put them in locked containers as other firearms.
Post a CommentBest Guns and Gear for 2010
November. 22nd 2010
Every December I survey the work Ben Brooks, Roger Eckstine, Ray Ordorica, Joe Syczylo, Gene Taylor, Kevin Winkle, R.K. Campbell, and Ralph Winingham have done in Gun Tests, with an eye toward selecting guns, accessories, and ammunition the magazine’s testers have endorsed. From these evaluations I pick the best from a full year’s worth of tests and distill summary recommendations for readers, who often use them as year-end shopping guides. These ‘best of’ choices are a mixture of our original tests and other information I’ve compiled during the year. After the magazine’s FFLs sell high-rated test products to readers, I keep tabs on how many of those guns do over time, and if the firearms and accessories continue performing well, then I have confidence including them in this wrap-up.
